Tips for Choosing the Right Moving Company

Moving to a new home is always an arduous task, so it makes sense that you would want to hire professionals to make the process a little bit easier. However, that in itself requires some work on your part. As much as you may want to hire the first Calgary moving company that you find on Google, there are some things that you should do first to make sure you’re making the best possible decision. Here are some tips that will help you find the right mover for you and your family.

Hire Locally If You Can

You might not think this is an option if you’re moving across the country or to the other side of the world, but you should always hire a local moving company whenever you can. It’s far easier to do business with a local compnay, especially since there’s less of a chance that you could be taken in with unscrupulous business practices. You will still need to do some additional research before making a hiring decision, but searching within your community is always a great place to start.

Get Some Estimates

No matter who you plan to hire for your move, you should always get at least three estimates before you make a decision. A reputable moving company will send a representative to your home to determine how much space is needed and how much work will need to be done. Make sure that any estimate you receive is in writing. Never accept an estimate over the phone, as this is often the sign of a scam.

Do Your Own Research

You can learn a lot about a moving company from in-person interviews and estimates that they make, but you should also be doing your own research. Ask friends and family members if they have any experience with the company, and read reviews online. If there are any serious complaints or obvious red flags, they will almost certainly show up in a Google search. You should still take online reviews with a grain of salt, though. Even the best businesses will have at least one or two dissatisfied customers, and people can say whatever they want on the Internet with almost no consequences. Read any bad reviews you find carefully. If there are several positive reviews and only one or two bad reviews that have some fairly petty complaints, you can be reasonably sure that you will have a good experience from a company.

Beware Large Deposits

A reputable moving company won’t ask for a cash deposit before your move. You will only have to pay after the move is complete, and what you do owe should be in line with the estimates that were made earlier.

Trust Your Gut

Your gut instincts can tell you a lot, and they’re usually right. If a moving company doesn’t feel like the right fit for you and your family, it almost certainly isn’t. Thank them for your time, and move on to another company near you. There will be plenty to choose from, and the right movers will make your relocation a breeze. Keep looking, and don’t give up.
